One taxi driver told stories of waiting patiently while elephants amble across the road, snakes make their slow journey through the bush, or a leopard refuses to abandon its freshly caught prey. The delay isn’t measured in frustration but in fascination. Here, wildlife sets the schedule, and people are happy to wait. “In any other town you’d blame the traffic,” one Kasane taxi driver laughed. “Here, you blame the leopard. I once had to wait nearly 40 minutes while it finished eating its kill before anyone could drive past. I had to call my boss to explain why I was late. It was when I first moved here, so it was quite peculiar to me. My then boss had lived in Kasane for a while and thought nothing of it,” said an amused Julie. Welcome to Kasane, Botswana’s northern frontier town and one of Southern Africa’s most remarkable gateways to the wild. Nestled on the banks of the Chobe River, Kasane is often described as the gateway to Chobe National Park. While that’s certainly true, it doesn’t tell the whole story.
Kasane is far more than a convenient stop on a safari itinerary. It is a destination where nature and daily life exist side by side, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into one of Africa’s richest wildlife regions. Situated near the point where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe almost meet, Kasane occupies one of the most strategic locations in Southern African tourism. Within easy reach are the spectacular Chobe National Park, the mighty Victoria Falls, and cross-border adventures that allow travellers to experience several countries in a single journey. Few destinations offer such an extraordinary combination of accessibility and wilderness. However, it is the wildlife that defines Kasane. Unlike many safari destinations where game reserves are separated from towns by fences and gates, Kasane has no such. Chobe National Park begins where the town ends, allowing elephants, hippos, warthogs and antelope to wander freely through the surrounding landscape. Visitors don’t need to venture far before experiencing Botswana’s famous biodiversity. In fact, many discover that the safari begins long before they arrive at the park entrance.
