As Botswana builds a knowledge-driven economy, the University of Botswana is transforming into a High- Performance Organisation, redefining how higher education contributes to national development. Botswana’s next chapter will not be written by diamonds alone. It will increasingly be shaped by ideas, innovation and the ability of its people to compete in a rapidly changing world. That, says University of Botswana Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris, is precisely why the country’s premier institution of higher learning is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history. “We are not transforming for the sake of change,” says Professor Norris. “We are transforming because Botswana is changing. The University must evolve alongside the nation and respond to its future needs.” At the heart of that evolution is the University’s transition into a High- Performance Organisation (HPO), a model designed to foster excellence, innovation, accountability and collaboration across every aspect of the institution.
“Research achieves its greatest value when it improves lives,” he says. “We want our discoveries to inform policy, strengthen communities and support economic growth.” Professor Norris also sees collaboration as essential to UB’s future. Partnerships with government, industry and international institutions are expanding opportunities for students, strengthening research and ensuring that knowledge developed on campus delivers practical impact beyond it. Looking ahead, he believes UB’s success will ultimately be measured by the value it creates for society. “Our ambition is to build a university that every Motswana is proud of - one whose graduates are recognised for excellence, whose research addresses national priorities and whose partnerships contribute to Botswana’s development.” Consequently, as Botswana advances towards Vision 2036, the University of Botswana is positioning itself not simply as a place of higher learning but as a driver of innovation, enterprise and national progress. Its transformation reflects a simple but powerful idea: that the country’s most valuable resource is not beneath the ground but within the potential of its people.
